About the Book

Poems by Susan H. Boggs (Susie) is a collection of poems written over a period of years while living in her family home in the hills of West Virginia. Susie’s poems reflect her love of nature and her philosophy of life. She sees beauty in flowers, trees, birds, and butterflies found near her home; remembers family activities of bygone days; recalls tales told to children by adults; expresses her respect for labor; and tells some of the many historical events attributed to President Abraham Lincoln. Susie’s Christian beliefs and wisdom were gained from life experiences with forty years of teaching in one-room schools and growing up with her twelve brothers and sisters. Her devout Christian parents influenced her thinking greatly, as her father was a circuit-riding preacher in the 1800s.

About the Author

Susan Hannah (Susie) Boggs (11/2/1898–5/3/1979) was the eldest of thirteen children and helped care for her younger siblings and her aging parents in their later years in their home at Linden, West Virginia. She taught in one-room schools for over forty years. Susie wrote poetry and prose. She was interested in American history, especially pioneer days, and she was a keen observer of human behavior, the beauty of flowers, and all natural life. A devout Christian, much of her work is laced with her philosophy of life. Susie wrote on pieces of paper she found lying around the house, and so much of her poetry and prose has been lost or destroyed. Only a small number of her poems remain for publication.
