The Devils Missed Her

The soldiers carried the prisoners away through the gunfight. The others were getting ready to retreat, firing aimlessly and drawing back. Their efforts were mostly to protect Ortega and the remaining troop followed behind him, providing cover for their leader. Another tracer round was shot from the forest and it blasted through a soldier's chest. Witnessing their comrade's death, the soldiers sped up their pace. Unlike what Havoc thought, the soldiers did not enter the forest through the trees like others she saw. Instead, they ran by its side until they reached a small path leading into the forest. The surroundings grew even darker as they rushed into the shadows of the trees and Havoc could barely see what was in front of her. The sound of gunshots eventually ceased and only the soldiers' footsteps were audible. The retreat continued for several minutes without a pause. Occasionally Havoc tried to shake off the soldiers' grip on her. It didn't work out too well. She gave up after a while and let them take her to wherever they were headed. When the guerrillas stopped, Havoc realized that they were at the bottom of a towering cliff which she couldn't see the top of. Then she saw the cave.
