Acusado de conspirar contra el dictador, un profesor chileno es torturado en uno de los campos de prisioneros instaurados por Pinochet. Se salva de una muerte segura y milagrosamente, logra escapar al extranjero. Por largo tiempo vive en el exilio donde él y su esposa se crean una nueva vida académica. Su familia crece. Años más tarde, casualmente se entera que un abuelo de la novia de su nieto había sido militar durante la dictadura. Motivado por esta fortuita circunstancia, inicia averiguaciones y descubre que el individuo en cuestión se encontraba asignado a la prisión donde él había sido apremiado. Intrigado, decide investigar cuál es el paradero actual de los sicarios, esbirros y verdugos del dictador. Sus pesquisas le permiten conocer a muchos de ellos ‒ “los otros” ‒ y nota que aquellos que fueron la mano activa de la dictadura torturando, asesinando y aterrorizando al pueblo chileno, nos son humanamente diferentes a “nosotros,” los que fuimos torturados. Sus indagaciones revelan que las conductas de esos “otros” no obedecen a valores intrínsecos, sino que actuaron así obedeciendo a la situación concreta en que se encontraban. Algunos, moralmente, ahora muestran un sincero arrepentimiento y buscan su redención. Sin embargo, hay también aquellos que, reconociendo sus crímenes, los justifican usando el consabido cliché “yo seguía órdenes.” Y, en una categoría diferente, están los que excusan sus conductas criminales como una necesidad del estado y aún mantienen con soberbia amoral, que lo que hicieron fue adecuado. Después de seguir varias huellas que lo conducen a caminos ciegos, el profesor logra establecer el lugar específico donde encontrar individuo que le ha torturado. Cuando lo ubica y lo enfrenta… “Ignorando un pasado incómodo no se pude construir un futuro confortable”.

About the Author

Dr. Rafael A. Olivares born in Stgo. Chile in 1944. In the same city he got his Title as Elementary School Teacher from the “Escuela Normal Superior José Abelardo Nunez.” While working as Elementary School Teacher, he got his College Degree and Title of High School Teacher from the “Universidad Técnica del Estado” and his Master Degree in Education from the Catholic University of Chile. He was a Professor of Pedagogy at the State Technical University when the dictatorship imposed by the militaries in Chile in 1973 make him to move to USA. To finance his doctoral studies in Bilingual Education at Teachers College, Columbia University at New York, for several years he taught Elementary School Children at PS 154, Central Harlem in Manhattan. In 1987 he becomes the Director of the Bilingual Education Program at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey and in 1990 he was hired at Queens College, City University of New York (CUNY) as a Tenure Track Professor of the Department of Elementary Education. There he created the Master in Bilingual Education Program of which he become his first Director. During his tenure at CUNY he wrote books on Bilingual Education Pedagogy and publish several professional articles on the subject of teaching in two languages. In 2010 he retired from the City University of New York and become a writer of fiction. As such, he has written in Spanish an historical fiction; “Ñusta y el Jardín del Sol” which describe the life of the Princes known as the sister of the Inkas Atahualpa and Húascar. Historically, Ñusta was not only the lover but also the mother of the children of Francisco Pizarro, the Conqueror of Peru. This book was translated into English as; “Ñusta the Inka Love of Fco. Pizarro.” The second fictional book of Dr. Olivares, “Nosotros y los Otros” is a historical novel of his life and his experiences with the Chilean dictatorial regime.
