About the Book

Jane Adams accepts reluctantly her first job out of journalism school at a small town weekly in the middle of Iowa to work for Jim McKay, editor and publisher, at the suggestion of her idolized father, Guy Adams, who is superintendent of the local school district, a good friend of the editor and a victim of a weakening heart. McKay is, in fact, supporting Adams in a challenge to the school board which is seeking funds to build a new gymnasium. Adams is fighting for an art center.

Jane, much to her surprise, finds working on a small weekly a challenge and a rewarding job. She gets involved with the bookkeeping and production as well as journalistic tasks. The work is enhanced by her growing attraction to the editor.

A conflict with her father followed by his death leaves her seeking consolation from Jim. Though she is disturbed by the final words of advice from her father, "Don´t fall in love with Jim McKay," she refuses to give up the dream. Financial problems at the paper add to the challenge and the relationship with Jim develops into somethng quite different from what she had anticipated.
