A Good Day for Shadows

About the Book

"The photographs in this book have had a long life. Some of you may recall having seen them in “The Shadow Book” written by Beatrice deRegniers. That book remained in print for over thirty years, seemingly a classic - until black-and-white illustration for children’s books became obsolete. Shadows, by nature being black, could not adjust to the age of color.

"Among the many changes caused by the tragedy of 9/11, appears to be a desire to slow down and enjoy life’s simpler pleasures. Shadows are simple. Shadows don’t change with the times. Shadows are not ambitious, envious, or greedy. Shadows are democratic. Everyone has a shadow and no one has more than one. Shadows don’t care about skin color or race. Shadows can be capricious. Shadows can be fun. Shadows can even be helpful.

"In this photographic essay, the story is in the pictures. It can be “read” by readers and non-readers alike. You might say that the “reader” creates the story."
