About the Book

About the Author

Desperate Summer is Joe Haymes’ first novel. A graduate of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, he retired in 1988 after thirty-eight years in the advertising agency business. He sold the first story he ever wrote for publication to a popular sailing magazine, Cruising World. His stories have won Gold and Silver Medals in local and statewide competitions in North Carolina.. Haymes was born in Lynchburg, VA, in 1925. He was drafted into the army in 1943, and spent seventeen months with the 26th Infantry Division in Europe. He served his combat time as a sniper, earning a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star Medal. He has done extensive sailing in the waters he writes about in Desperate Summer; the Chesapeake Bay and the Grenadines in the Caribbean. The island of Bequia is one of his favorite ports of call. Haymes and his wife, the former Geraldine Fox, have three children, Ross, Doug and Peggy.
