About the Book

Three teen age boys from the slums of New York join the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Fall of 1938. Crossing the country on an army troop train they see the wondrous geography of America from the Eastern seaboard, across the plains of the Midwest and over the Rocky Mountains to the West Coast. Working in the forests of the Pacific northwest they grow both physically and emotionally. After a winter in the Oregon forests they are transferred to Glacier Park, Montana. Here they experience the excitement and danger of fighting forest fires. The boys also try their hands at riding Brahma bulls at the Babb Roundup on the Blackfeet Indian reservation. They return home a year later, taller, stronger, and more mature.
