About the Book

Lily Calling Dove Bolton is a Cherokee-Celtic girl born into a magical, natural world in Chalice, Texas. It is 1942. The world is at war. In Chalice, the Ku Klux Klan marches openly in the streets in daylight. At night, young black men are not safe. Lily is raised by her mother, Charity McCoy and by Leyla Stoneright, who works with Charity and shares the secrets of her heart. Lily leaves home at 13. She gives birth to a son in Reverend Zaruthra's home for unwed mothers. She is blessed in the arms of Zaruthra, a charismatic African-American minister whose heart fills the earth where she lives.

After many years and many turns of life, Lily is a single mother working her way through pre-medicine. Now comes Doña Canta, a Mexican curandera who teaches Lily to love the earth and her peoples.

Lily discovers Doña Canta is the teacher of refugees from Central America who come seeking a new life. Lily works in Canta's underground clinic, seeing birth and death. She enters medical school, finding the circumscribed world of medicine fascinating and alien to her heart, which still lives in the piney woods of Chalice.

A Promise of Forgiveness is the first novel of a grail trilogy. It is the story of the evolution of one soul. It is the story of our earth. To search for the grail is to seek the true self. This visionary novel tells many stories within stories over four generations, from 1900 to 1999.
