About the Book

"There's often an unfortunate paradox with memoirs: Those who have lead the most interesting lives aren't often the best writers; and too often, the most eloquent writers lack interesting lives. In Armin Lehmann's memoir HITLER'S LAST COURIER, we find an incredible life experience rendered by a natural gift for story telling. Here is a harrowing tale of a German youth thrust into the upsweep of Nazi power, eye-witness to the fall of Berlin, and survivor of the most pivotal moment in 20th century history. Here is a story of a boyhood world of soccer and horses and halcyon hikes in the forest turned to the sudden horrors of war. Here is the story of a boy sent to the Eastern Front, wounded in combat, awarded the Iron Cross for heroism. The story of  a boy who went, basically from Boy Scout to soldier, who looked, face to face, in the eyes of Hitler, who grew up trying to please the expectations of his father - to be a hero, a man of courage for the cause of the German fatherland, and to find out, as Berlin fell to flames, as he found himself not a victor of war, but a POW, that it was all lies.

Love, death, loss, and a self-consciousness wrestling with the past - here is history at its best: not smooth from the scholar's desk, bur raw from the voice of experience.

HITLER'S LAST COURIER is sure to take its place as an important testimony, enriching and expanding the collective record of the last century."

Born In Germany, Armin Lehmann was 4 years old when Hitler assumed power. Completely indoctrinated and brainwashed by Naziism, Lehmann - hailed as a hero of the home defence force -  became the last runner from the radio room below the Party Chancellery and Hitler's hidden underground bunker across Wilhelmstrasse.

As seen with the eyes and mind of a 16-year old, Lehmann describes compellingly the grim truths  leading to Hitler's suicide - and thereafter to the author's redemption.

Armin D. Lehmann, in his adult life became an active and outspoken pacifist and peacemaker. He explored the world and, professionally held leading positions in the travel and tourism industry, promoting world peace everywhere and in every way possible.

Aside from poems published in German, he is the author of TRAVEL AND TOURISM (Bobbs-Merrill/Glencoe/Macmillan - 8th prtg.) and of TOMORROW'S WORLD - A Book of Peace -  which is presently being updated for a second edition to be published in 2002. - Armin D.
