Wow, I feel like I know Fida personally and could count her as one of my friends. The style of writing is like a conversation with a friend, I could imagine sitting with coffee and cake and chatting with her. Wonderfully written, it is like a peep into someone's life, warts and all. She is not afraid of writing it as it is, and doesn't sugar coat anything. The fact that English isn't her first language makes the book more personal and readable, and her descriptions of everyday matters are stunningly brought to life with her informal writing style. I would recommend this book, it is a fantastic insight into a 'normal' life - and Fida comes across as a beautiful, warm, kind person.

All the while, taking the reader on an adventure, navigating through her obstacles with precision. The fact that the author was raised in Indonesia, and wrote this book in English, is a perk. The words sometimes give the reader the feeling she writes English as she would speak it, with a hint that she is educated in another language. I enjoyed her inclusion that shows her proficiency in a professional position in a writing course in Indonesia. Her recollections of her childhood were very moving. I was impressed by her cooking of delectable Asian/Indonesian meals, entertaining, tending to her beautiful garden, teaching her daughter the skills of life, and being a loving wife, while possessing a certain independence. This book illustrates what a person can accomplish with dedication and hard work, drive and strong will. I read the book twice. Fida Abbott is a compassionate, kind, exuberant and intelligent person. I am fortunate enough to know her personally. She is a member of my church. She greets everyone with a sparkle in her eye and “Enthusiasm”. I loved reading her book.
