Opening his eyes Willie saw a small bright light fly through the open window, it hovered over him for a few seconds then flew upstairs, and the room was lit in the strange light. Sleep fogged his brain he was wondering if the light was an ember from the fire or something else, then he heard a door upstairs open and close and footsteps coming down the stairs. Evan appeared at the bottom of the stairs, dressed to go outside, he lay there as still as a mouse, with squinted eyes watching. His dad stopped and checked if they were asleep, he placed a blanket on each of them, then went outside, closing the door very quietly behind him. Jumping to his feet, Willie went to the back window, the glowing light was there again, and he watch his dad walk into the bush towards the bright light. This had happened so many times before, Willie just had to know what his dad was doing, so he decided to follow him. Pulling on his coat he tiptoed to the back door. Opening the door the coolness of the night made him take a deep breath, to the gate he went as quite as a mouse, going from tree to tree Willie followed his dad from a distance into the bush, down the steep track, to the creek, he watched him cross by stepping stones, and he followed quietly. The full moon helped him see the cliff face way up the other side and the strange glow. Evan stopped near a cave where the glow was coming from Slowly he crept forward, as close as he dared and laid under a large leaf bush, where he could not be seen he thought. Evan sat down on a log in front of the light, out of the glow a very small bright light appeared then changed into … it couldn’t be – he rubbed his eyes and looked again. It was a Fairy just like in the stories his dad had told. Willie was stunned, right there hovering in front of his dad was a tiny flying person. Holding out his big hand the Fairy landed on his palm. Willie could see his dad and a fairy talking, but he could not hear what they were saying. He just lay there transfixed on the tiny Fairy.

Neale Payne was born in 1957 and grew up playing in the bush and the beach. He has had many jobs, from General Manager to handyman, and can turn his hand to fix or make anything. He failed English twice, but this did not hold him back from his goals. Always a storyteller, he finds treasures or adventures under every rock through his imagination. A traveller who turns up when his friends and family least expect it, he is now tackling his newest adventure with writing stories and producing products and toys for the wee people who believe in fairies and magic.
