Mary took in a long breath of the cold, damp air. Pulling it deep down into her lungs, as she did, she thought of the roller coaster of emotions she’d felt since she opened her eyes that morning, and it still wasn’t lunch, nor was it over. Even before this morning’s events, she’d put in place an event that would change all their lives. Letting the breath out slowly, Mary turned Merlins head back down the track and to the shadows of the woods. It was then that she noticed the fog. It’d started to settle on the ground, and was almost like it had taken on a life of its own. A gentle wisp of air had it swirling around the feet of the horses, and then as the ground first started to disappear, the fog started to rise. First the track, and the fallen leaves on the ground disappeared, then underbrush, the leaves of the bracken appeared to take on an almost ghost like image. Mary had never known a fog to suddenly appear like this, or behave like this one; but she calmed herself with the thorough that she was in Ireland, and maybe this happened all the time here. When Mary looked over to Ashling expecting to see the usual confident and strong person that she radiated; instead Mary saw fear in Ash’s eyes. The horses had started to move nervously, ready to bolt at the slightest movement in the undergrowth, and Mary could feel Merlin’s body turn rock hard as his skin stretched taut over his strong muscles. Then they heard it. A growl so deep and menacing, no true animal could ever have made it. Mary instantly realized she could feel the vibration of the growl through her whole body; it was like she was sitting in a car where the base on the stereo was so high, you could feel it as well as hear it. Mary and Ashling froze, unable to move but not just the girls, the horses were also frozen to the spot. It was like someone, or something had taken control of them. A bead of nervous sweat trickled slowly from Mary’s hair line, down to her chin, before it dripping off. Every hair on Mary’s body stood up on end, as she could feel eyes boring deep into her soul. Whatever had made that sound, was watching her; looking right through her, and she could sense that whatever, or whoever, was taking it’s time deciding what it was going to do next! Then, as quickly as it had appeared, the fog started to melt back into the ground and with it the heart stopping feeling of impending danger.

Mary’s life was all mapped out; she knew where she was going and what she was going to do. Mark has also arrived from Australia; he’s tall, dark, and very handsome, and she’s not the only person to fall under his spell. She has a rival for his heart and the perfect body who fits so well into his riding britches. How the girls wish they could ride him as easily as they could ride their own horses. The Manor House is now an international five-star motel and function center, and working conditions are better than most places in Ireland, but few, if any, of locals will work there. Something bad had happened there on the hill the Manor had been built on, so few dared enter.
About the Author
Jennie Lea although being born in Australia, comes from an Irish heritage. Her grandfather is a descendent of the Spanish Gypsies who came to Galway to make Ireland their home. As well as her grandmother’s family tree, a simple farmer in Killkenny, and a school teacher in Carlow who came out to make Australia their home. Horses and the Irish Legends were a part of her upbringing by her grandmother. But it wasn’t until she moved to Ireland to work at one of the primary Thoroughbred studs in Maynooth Co Kildare, that she really felt like she’d come home. It’s been a dream of Jennie’s from the age of twelve that one day she wanted to be a published writer, and up until now Jennie has written and taught Equine Nutrition, as well as the Anatomy and Physiology of the Equine Digestive System. But it was the telling of the story that was missing in her life. Growing up listening to the stories her grandmother would tell about her family heritage, taught to her verbatim as it had for countless generations past. And now with this book and the next two books in this series that Jennie has been able to bring her dream into reality, and she’s shown that no matter how long it takes, it’s never too late to follow your dream.
