About the Book
Dorland’s Illustrated Medical Dictionary is recognized as the world’s leading encyclopedic medical dictionary. It was first published in 1890 and is now in its 32nd edition. When the dictionary’s editor, Dr. Alexander Newman Dorland, died in 1956, the dictionary was retitled to include his name.
The current publisher of Dorland’s is Elsevier, the largest publisher of medical books in the world. Over the years, Dorland's has been translated into several languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and Italian. The only Slavic language into which Dorland’s has been translated is Ukrainian.
Dorland’s Ukrainian-English Medical Dictionary consists of over 2,200 pages. This dictionary provides a comprehensive coverage of theoretical and practical aspects of current medicine. It is a seminal work in Ukrainian medical lexicography – containing 9,000 more fully-defined entries than found in the previous edition. It has over 1,100 color images and illustrations.
The publication of Dorland’s in the Ukrainian language holds special significance for Ukrainians. Historically, for over 300 years, the Ukrainian language has been the victim of intense repression. Since 1667, when Tsar Aleksey of Russia ordered the burning of Ukrainian books and prescribed the death penalty for anyone printing them, Ukraine has undergone several long and intense periods of Russification. For example, in 1974, students who identified themselves as Ukrainian were limited to 25% or less of the freshman class at universities in Western Ukraine. Despite all such efforts to eradicate the Ukrainian language, a census in 2001 determined that 67.5% of the population in Ukraine still gave Ukrainian as their native language. These are only some of the developments that prompted the American Ukrainian Medical Foundation, which is responsible for publishing Dorland’s Ukrainian translation, to promote the healthcare standards of Ukraine through its Ukrainian publications so that Ukrainian physicians could communicate with their patients in their very own language.
