About the Book

The book is presented as a discussion for middle school students on maths symbols, number sense, operations and patterns. The discussion explores the relative magnitude of numbers, how numbers are related, written and represented in different contexts. The book highlights that symbols represent mathematical ideas and middle school students need to explore the links between everyday physical objects, models and mathematical symbols to develop number sense, competence with basic number operations, as well as algebraic thinking through exploring relations within and among patterns.

About the Author

Dr Philemon Chigeza has taught science and mathematics in the middle school for many years. He is interested in capacity building teaching and learning strategies that affirm students’ lived languages, experiences and knowledge in their learning.
