Black Elder Speaks is a collection of Dr. Frederick Douglas Harper’s poetry and prose on the topics of race, race relations, Black consciousness, Black pride, racial identity, and racism. In addition, Harper speaks from years of acquired wisdom in providing advice and insight on topics of holistic health and rightful living. The book is divided into seven major sections that include (a) Race, Racism, and Racial Struggle, (b) Honoring Black Women, (c) Honoring Black Men, (d) Honoring and Rearing Black Children, (e) Black Culture, Health, and Spirituality, (f) Black Consciousness and Black Pride, and (g) Black Elders Speaks on Life and from Wisdom (for example, on themes of love, peace, giving, forgiveness, purpose, freedom, truth, courage, pain vs. pleasure, and spirituality). The book concludes with a number of wise quotes and thoughts.

BOOK REVIEW BY FRANCES YVONNE HICKS , Ed. D. 7/15/2021 BLACK ELDER SPEAKS by Frederick Douglas Harper I had thoughts of writing a book just like this one but Dr. Frederick D. Harper has already written it for me. I would have chosen the same title, the same book cover (with me wearing that classic double breasted navy blue jacket), the same characters, the same voices, the same (s)hero favorites, the same challenging topics, the same controversial issues, the same references, the same layout, right down to the same number of pages. I mean it! I can dive right into reading this book and immediately connect with memories of places and times and thoughts and people for whom I would honor, as he has honored in such a highly deserving manner/way. As always, high levels of wisdom and experience (professional and personal) have been remarkably espoused. Living proof of life's lessons, gathered through life time experiences and observations. Read alone, this book reveals a lot of information about the life of Dr. Harper (in a very condensed version). His experiences are the backbone upon which this book is composed. Personal references and episodes from the days and times of his --early years through family and hometown and early civil rights and desegregation era; middle years including the insincere attempts at racial equity or human rights; professional years as an academician, researcher, professor, editor of two national journals; right up to his becoming the honored recipient of the Frederick D. Harper Distinguished Elder Award at the conference of the NBCPA. Within the covers are exhibited many literary forms and creative writing styles --- poetry, prose, odes, couplets, Haikus, sonnets and prayers, which keep the reader interested. The compilation of topics and mixture of writing styles hold your attention and makes for an unique flow of ideas and thinking, anxiously leading to "What's next?". AND, within this book are the warning signs....He follows the sciences, both social and natural. He practices theories of 'the match' where the two have undeniable relationships and he spits out prophetically the substance and importance of these issues including love, race and racism, peace, courage, forgiveness, giving, spirituality and more. These topics make up the latter chapter of the book----The Black Elder Speaks on Life and From Wisdom. So get ready to read of many challenges and approaches gleaned from the life experiences of one person who writes of insight, advice, and courage that makes sense for the days to come and leading to a thesis on how mankind/humanity can still exist/coexist . The advice and numerous messages, thoughts and "wisdom- words" (some reminiscent of the ancestors) are as important today as they were in years gone by, and will probably exhibit much of the same flavor, in years to come. We may still want to revisit these good old messages but sometimes they come to visit us first. Please let there be yet another book on the horizon. I still need to read and enjoy more and more of his ideas and writing that I always appreciate and share with my discussion group.
