About the Book

Bernadette Walker’s Bernadette It’s Me provides a glimpse into the life of a lady who unobtrusively lived life to the fullest. Whether it was growing up in inner city Melbourne during the depression and World War Two, her long love affair with the Australian bush, her employment at one of Melbourne’s most respected jewellery stores or her charity work, she appreciated all that filled her days. Running like a constant thread through her story is the love of friends, family and colleagues and it is this very love that she cherished the most. Bernadette also shares over 53 recipes she has collected over the years.

About the Author

Bernadette Walker (nee Mathews) grew up in inner city Melbourne during the depression and World War Two. While her parents struggled to make ends meet her early years were full of adventure and happiness in a safe and loving environment. The strong family and community ties that bound her to North Melbourne enabled her to flourish. Family get togethers, Saturday football, singing, dancing and time spent at her ancestral home in pastoral Tallangatta. Leaving school at fourteen, Bernadette commenced her working life at Dunklings an iconic Melbourne Jewellery store, at a time when customer service was paramount. Starting there as a naive and impressionable girl, she soon blossomed and thrived on the challenge and camaraderie of the shop, gaining respect and recognition in her trade. Horses are Bernadette’s other great love. As a young girl, she developed a passion for them. Horse racing provided her with a social outlet, an activity to share with her adored husband and an opportunity to showcase beautiful clothes and gorgeous hats.
