About the Book
The stories in The Rattling of Chains take place along the waterways that carried the earliest explorers of our new world from Montreal to Lake Superior, and then onward down the rivers and streams flowing to St. Paul, Minnesota.
The collection explores a family’s French Canadian heritage; brings together graduates of a woman’s school for a forty year reunion; and propels a couple into a night of terror on Isle Royale. The short tales zoom in for a briefer look at the average river town’s citizens. All are involved in the never ending struggle to loosen centuries old cultural chains.
About the Author
Joan M. Baril was born and raised in a Minnesota river town, as were her parents, descendents of Canadians, French and Scots who came together in the Montreal and Lake of the Woods area. The stories in this collection and the characters who populate them were born in the writer’s imagination while she was researching earlier work. The stories are fiction based on fact.
