About the Book
Herbie and Ben, eleven-year-old friends from an affluent eastern suburb, arrive at Camp Ago-Nee for a “maturing” experience. “You need to grow up if you expect to succeed on Wall Street,” Herbie’s hypercritical father tells him. Together with Geraldine, a spirited, adventuresome girl camper, the trio encounter a cast of bizarre adults: a muddle-headed camp director, a sadistic Phys. Ed. instructor, goofy, bumbling FBI agents, traitorous spies, and insensitive doctors. They face one crisis after another: a gang of bullies, a kidnapping, an alligator attack, and burial in an underground shelter. And that´s not to mention a mysterious illness which sweeps through the camp. “An Indian tribe once lived on this campsite,” the director tells them. “Legend has it that the tribe was plagued by evil spirits. They must have returned this summer to cause all the trouble.” Herbie, Ben, and Geraldine join forces to survive the summer. When the boys return home, their parents find they have matured in ways never imagined. “Sometimes I wonder whether those evil spirits really meant it for our own good,” Herbie says to Ben.
