About the Book

About the Author

Born in 1926 in Boston, Sumner Shapiro was educated at Public Latin school. He rubbed elbows with some well-known faculty while earning degrees in psychology and biology at Harvard University where he was studying to become a psychoanalyst . After serving as an officer in the United States Navy, Shapiro, a self proclaimed sun worshipper, settled in suburban California where he devoted much of his time to the famed Psychoanalytic Institute. As a student and later a professor, Shapiro focused on probing the depths of the psyche. His efforts resulted in a handful of insightful essays, that soon grew into his first book: “Moment of Insight.” The style, based on Robert Lindner’s “Fifty Minute Hour,” blends real-life histories with a succinct, narrative approach, the classic Freudian said. A champion of the English language, Shapiro has been known to phone Fortune 500 companies demanding they correct the misuse of words or phrases in advertisements. A die-hard linguist, Shapiro is self-taught in several other languages. He has had several books published including “Beyond Insight” and the acclaimed “Psychoanalytic Cookbook.” Shapiro, whose work in psychoanalysis spans more than 50 years, lives in Encino, California.
