About the Book
What Lies Beneath The Ocean? “A spellbinding ecosystem awaiting discovery”, says author, diver, and underwater photographer Maria Di Paolo-Greer. Life underwater is much like the life above. There are cities built upon strong sturdy foundations and habitants of all kinds living within them. Underwater, the foundations are coral reefs and the habitants include fish, marine mammals, nudibranchs, sea stars, crinoids, and reptiles to name a few. Watching these marine animals in a natural environment built thousands of years ago, is both fascinating and intriguing. The ecosystem’s complex nature and fine-tuned balance are what lure Ms. Di Paolo-Greer into its realm as often as possible, with her underwater camera system always ready. “To breath underwater, completely suspended, is an adventure of its own. To interact with ocean life in its natural habitat is a great privilege not experienced by many.” says Ms. Di Paolo-Greer.
Since experiencing the underwater world off the coast of Fiji in 1999, Ms. Di Paolo-Greer has aspired to capture the ocean’s life force via photography, and share its mysteries with divers and non-divers. “Since photographing the underwater realm in 1999, I have realized that everyone is interested in understanding what lies beneath the sea,” Ms. Di Paolo-Greer says. “No matter the person’s age, gender, or interests... what lies beneath the sea seems to fascinate everyone who comes across my photographs.”
With the support of her three dive buddies, and a goal of sharing the underwater mysteries with readers throughout the world, she published her first picture book, “A Delicate Balance: The South Pacific". “A Delicate Balance: The South Pacific” is over 150 pages of colorful underwater photographs, researched facts, and entertaining narratives. It takes the readers on a journey to the primitive reaches and depths of the tropical South Pacific. “The photographs provide a glimpse into the ocean’s soul.”, says Ms. Di Paolo-Greer.
