About the Book

Losing a spouse is one of the most difficult life changing events in one’s life. In her reflective piece, Mary Butler chronicles her experiences, thoughts, and feelings through her first year as a 48 year old widow. Through poems, letters, and journal entries, Mary provides her readers with an honest, frank, and poignant look at the challenges faced by mid-life widows. The title, Learning to Fly Again is shared by a poem written by Mary, evoking injury, but not defeat for those suddenly widowed.

About the Author

A native to the San Francisco Bay Area, Mary Butler is an elementary school teacher. She served several years in union leadership for her local teachers’ association and was an instructor for teacher credential candidates at a local college. Mary has published two short stories with the Bay Area Writing Project. This is her first book. Mary spends her free time running, writing, serving as a Eucharistic minister in her church, and offering support to other widows and widowers. She resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with her dog, Marianne.
