About the Author
Harvey Rempel grew up in the small prairie town of Carman in Manitoba. He was the middle son among five boys in a large family that included three older sisters. This story is written for a very modest anticipated readership-a few family members and one or two other friends who have expressed an interest in knowing a little more about growing up in the harsh environment of the Canadian Prairies during the worst of the Great Depression. From his earliest years Harvey was a communicator. In High School he wrote a regular column in the Dufferin Leader, the local weekly. In school and college he was always involved in student politics. In his career, he helped start staff magazines. Upon retirement, he was immediately commissioned to write a full history of his employer of almost forty years- the Zurich Insurance Company. Now in retirement- he is the Editor of Zurich’s “Twenty Five Year Club Newsletter” In addition to this autobiography, he has just completed the life story of his late wife; the noted Canadian mezzo-Joan Maxwell. Last fall a lengthy article about the lifetime relationship his family had with Glenn Gould was published in the Glenn Gould Journal.
