About the Author

Loyd was blessed to have been born into a large family of eleven siblings, five brothers and six sisters. His early years were spent as a simple country boy in what would be considered today as poverty. Part of his life was lived in a farming community in the Piedmont section of North Carolina, and the balance of the time was spent roaming the hills of the Great Smoky Mountains. However, with the great love and support of a godly mom and dad and the closeness of a large family, Loyd considers himself to be rich. Loyd attributes his source of inspiration and values in life to his modest and humble surroundings. His poem Winter Time Memories will give you a good glimpse into a part of his childhood. Loyd does most of his writing early in the morning but usually has something to scribble notes on no matter where he is. It should not be a surprise that much of his writing reflects a deep sense of family, religious, and Southern roots. Inspiration also comes from the times he would sit with his mom and listen to old phonograph records. He learned to play the guitar at around seven years of age and accompanied his mother when she would sing in church. He attributes his romance and relationship poetry to the love he has found in his wife Kathy. They met in 1972 at a Friday skate night, dated for just under three weeks, and then were married. Loyd has been known to possess a good sense of humor, which shows up occasionally in his work. Loyd has often told the story of the time of his birth. He says, “When I was born, instead of the doctor slapping me on my bottom, he took one look at me and slapped my dad.” His motto is “Having a good sense of humor is better than no sense at all!” Loyd is a Christian. His aim is to love God and his wife, children, and grandchildren. He tries to be a friend to anyone who would allow him to be. He loves life and just living. His attitude reflects a person who is thankful for every day that God gives! Loyd prefers the mountains above the ocean but loves all of God’s creation. He loves America and respects and admires those who have served in the military to preserve her freedom! In Loyd’s own words, he says, “I consider myself blessed to be able to write, and I am thankful for each one who has read and/or inspired my writing. It is especially rewarding to have someone comment that my writing was a blessing to them in some way.” In concluding this brief profile and on behalf of Loyd, a big thank you to all who take of their precious time reading this book Using My Muse offered to you, the reader, from the heart of the simple poet, Loyd Taylor.
