About the Book

These letters were written in the 1940’s when Helga was living in Palo Alto, California. Her letters unintentionally give the reader a compelling history lesson of what it was like to be alive during World War II. Her interesting narratives show us how lives were personally affected by the constant daily reminders of a world at war. It would make Helga especially happy for her family to connect with her and get to know her through these letters, which you will find quite captivating. Helga’s letters and photographs were compiled by her granddaughter, Joan Christin Brock (1948 - )

About the Author

Helga was born in 1889 in Denmark. When she was 18, she came to America. She had written home to Denmark for years. During WWII, mail could not be sent across the Atlantic. Even though Helga could not mail her letters, she continued to write them. She kept her letters in notebooks. Her first letter is dated April 28, 1942. As the war dragged on, weeks turned into months and months turned into years. Helga continued to write. A first notebook was filled and then another. Her last letter was recorded July 9, 1945, in her fifth and final notebook.
