About the Book

During Mexico’s bloody revolution against Maximilian and his French army in 1862, Pablo Cordova and his pregnant wife, Eufemia, are struggling to save their small farm in the foothills of the Sierra Madres in Northern Mexico from the worst drought in history. The mercy they extend to a passing stranger ultimately forces them from their farm to pursue a new life for themselves and their family. Their destination is Tularosa, New Mexico. A vengeful captain in Mexico’s Juarista Army shows antipathy toward Pablo and Eufemia. He thinks they helped his brother’s killer to escape. After a relentless pursuit, the captain confronts them in El Paso, Texas; a place where he has no authority. In their struggle to survive, Pablo and Eufemia get a temporary reprieve by escaping from the captain and a band of desperados he had befriended, only to face nature’s own obstacles before they reach Tularosa. A blizzard catches them on a mountaintop overlooking Tularosa when Eufemia goes into hard labor and can’t continue. Pablo must deliver the baby in the storm by himself.
