About the Book
Story of business entrepreneur raised in heart of old south who takes in a black adolescent, and raises him as member of own family. Shock of the "intrusion" causes destruction of benefactor's marriage. Educated black man then enters politics, and is elected first Black man to the U.S. Senate from North Carolina. White benefactor marries, and backs his adopted, black senator for a successful run at the Presidency of the U.S.
About the Author
Born July 5, 1927, Logan County, W. Va. Son of Practicing physician. Grew up in Logan County, W. Va. Attended public school through Junior High, (Middle School.) Enrolled in Greenbrier Military School, Lewisburg, W. Va. Entered U.S. Navy April, 1945 until August 2, 1946, honorably discharged. Enrolled in W. Va. University in Fall term, 1946. Began flight school on G. I. Bill of rights. Obtained private license, 1948. Entered USAF flight school June, 1948. Remained on active duty until retirement July 1, 1968, as Lt. Colonel. Married Joanne Driscoll December 27th, 1949. Enrolled Elon College September, 1970, graduating August, 1973, with AB in English.
