About the Book

At a young age, Scott Massey learns the emotional fallout of grief, through the loss of his father to World War II, and guilt, when he accidentally kills his baby sister. Unable to forgive him, Scott’s step-dad begins a pattern of abuse so constant that, at age 13, Scott leaves home when his mother, Pearl, announces a new baby is on the way. But when he runs afoul of the law, Scott’s fate is sealed. Homesick for his mother’s loving arms and safety of his hometown of Cheddar, Maine, Scott learns life’s harsh cold lessons, as he walks and hitchhikes his way to the mid-west. In Ohio, an old corn farmer, Tucker Flynn, hires a tired and hungry Scott to rejuvenate his cornfields. Meanwhile, back in Cheddar, Sheriff Nathan Fox takes center stage as he investigates Scott’s disappearance and comforts Pearl when her marriage falls apart. During the harvest, Scott regains his self-worth and trust through his new friend, Samantha. They bond and share their darkest secrets as the sheriff closes in.
