About the Book
Architect and Designer Dinesh Doshi’s book “The Art & Science of Store Design” takes the reader on a journey through city planning to store design. The reader follows Doshi throughout his earlier years as an artist and designer while studying in India and receiving his Masters of Architecture from the prestigious Pratt Institute in New York City. Upon graduation, Doshi pursued a celebrated career in city planning but soon developed a passion for retail store design which gave rise to his award-wining firm, Architectonics International Inc. which recently celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary.
After experiencing a devastating fire at his Long Island, New York office, Doshi lost precious documents, schematics and store designs. It was at this critical juncture that he decided to share his knowledge and experience with the next generation of designers. He soon approached his writing partner, W.B. King, who brought the project to fruition.
To date, Doshi has completed over 600 store design projects including supermarkets, superettes, convenience stores, fast food establishments and department stores. “The Art & Science of Store Design” provides a unique insight into the store design process detailing every aspect, from the first sketch to the grand opening. The critical variables such as space layout, construction, materials, marketing and management oversight are covered in great detail providing a seldom available look into the mind of an international acclaimed architect and designer.
Filled with real-life examples and appealing imagery, this indispensable handbook concentrates on everything from the importance of lighting and signage to the value of proper material selection. Design does indeed begin with a sound and functional layout. However, the author also stresses that aesthetics will also drive the success or failure of a retail operation.
Praised by leading architects, store operators and students, “The Art & Science of Store Design” comes highly recommended, a truly valuable resource to have especially for Architecture and Business Schools. It is a comprehensive, insightful and knowledge-based soup-to-nuts guide to retail store design.
