Vera Allen “All that I have seen teaches me to trust God for all that I have not seen.” This quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson speaks profoundly of the lives of three amazing female family members of the writer, Charvette. Using the name of paternal grandmother E. Vera Allen, the writer gives life to the characteristics found in her grandmothers and a great-aunt. These wise, caring women knew happiness, sorrow, anger, and betrayal. Their lives span periods in African-American history when communities transitioned from Jim Crow-laden breeding dens to multicultural neighborhoods. These poems give voice to the lives of these remarkable women.
