About the Book

Riding into Hopeville to locate a small ranch to buy, Thomas bentwell heard the whoops and hallers with which old Whitey Blackstone a miner greeted a letter from the assay office announcing that he had struck it rich. With a number of men of questionable character within earshot, Thomas knew this would mean that those with gold fever would be out to get Whitey and take over his claim. So, out of a sense of justice, Thomas became the miner’s self-appointed protector. He followed the gunman who were trailing Whitey and saved the oldster from a shootout. In gratitude, the old miner sold Thomas his quarter-section of powder range and sixty head of cattle, then rode out to keep his postponed date with death, leaving Thomas to break the news to Whitey’s beautiful Granddaughter, and to find the old man’s murder.
