In the summer of 1944 he met and married Ann Cooke, the daughter of a prominent physician in Portsmouth, Virginia. In January 1945 he was transferred to the Pacific Fleet where he spent the remainder of World War II on the Staff Commander Air Force, Pacific Fleet. He completed his active military service at the conclusion of the Korean conflict.
