Mark Raines A prisoner, in theory, since his early teens, Mark Raines could only dream of escaping Chicago and migrating to Baltimore. Sight unseen, Baltimore has always been his calculated destination. From the glory years with Weaver, Palmer and Brooks, to the unprecedented run of losing seasons, he has remained in the ever-tightening grip of obsession. A local sports writer and race track teller on Chicago's South Side, Raines cannot lose sight of his true calling and the beacon that summons his: Baltimore, Maryland. Chicago saloons and a well-hidden gambling parlor grant temporary solace, but Baltimore beckons and there is no retreat. With motives and priorities most will never come to grips with, a fan unlike any other takes us from those hot summer nights in Waverly to the recent years in the venue between Pigtown and the Inner Harbor. Attempts at companionship with peers are half-hearted, if made at all. The inspiration and subsequent fix can come only through Baltimore and its baseball team. This is a fan. This is his story.
