About the Book
Jackson Frederick and Jerry Troxel, two old friends from grade school days, got together after retirement and decided to ride bicycles to Alaska. They had no sponsor, no support team or support vehicles to carry their gear. They didn’t sell tickets or solicit pledges to finance their expedition. They just packed up one morning in early June and headed north to Alaska. There was precious little money for such things as eating in restaurants or staying in hotels or motels. They planned to camp out every night for the next fifty to sixty days they thought it would take. Neither of them was daunted at that prospect. They packed the essentials on their bicycles, including sleeping bags and a small two-man tent. The one luxury was a tiny propane camp stove to make coffee in the morning. They would buy their food in markets along the way and eat in the open. Starting in Manti, Utah, they biked through approximately 1,200 miles of mountainous terrain and 2,200 on less strenuous, but still often difficult, roads and highways before arriving in Fairbanks, Alaska on July 21st. Despite the many hardships, nearly everyday had been a fascinating and memorable experience.
