About the Author
After being discharged from the United States Army in February 1946, the author went to the University of California in Berkeley for one year and completed his predental courses and then went for four years to the College of Physicians Dental School, now the University of Pacific Dental School, and graduated with his DDS degree in 1951. He practiced in Castro Valley, California, until 1977 when he moved to Gualala, California, and practiced there until 1985 when he retired. In 1946, he married Maurine Burk in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, whom he had met while in the service in the ASTP program They adopted two children, Steve and Barbara. They have three grandchildren—Jennifer, Matthew, and Lisa. Maurine died in 2000, and the author now lives alone in Santa Rosa, California. While Maurine was alive, they took many cruises to all parts of the world. The author still travels and has been to Belgium four times since 2000. He has visited many of the places where he was during the Battle of the Bulge and also in the Siegfried Line. Each year, he and some of his family go to Sitka, Alaska, for an annual fishing trip. He is a member of the Oakmont Kiwanis Club and enjoys playing bridge.
