Mercedes Vizarro was born in Texas and raised in the beliefs and traditions of the Mexican – American culture. She was married for twelve years to a man from her culture that she later divorced due to his physical and mental abuse of her. The negative aspects of the Mexican – American culture along with personal calamitous events gave her the desire to improve her life. Mercedes moved away, attended college and re-married.
