A World Apart

About the Book

This is a story about a young married couple, Jake and Rachel Courtney. Deliriously happy together at first, they allow the circumstances of life to gradually push them further and further apart. Finally, Rachel feels that she has no choice but to walk out of their marriage and out of Jake’s life.

While pursuing a medical career that she had all but given up for her husband, Rachel finds God and receives a new purpose and a holy calling for her life. She completes her education, receives her medical degree, and prepares to build a career that her Lord would be pleased with.

However, some years later fate in the guise of her uncle, Dr. Chester Morris, intervenes and Rachel finds herself once more in her hometown of Leighton. She barely gets settled in when she is confronted by the man she was married to.

Fireworks ensue and a whole new relationship is off and running. Then Rachel is threatened by the father of one of her patients and Jake is put in the position of having to protect her. He readily accepts his new assignment as it seems to be to him the means by which he can discover what really happened to the happiness that they once shared.

But Jake finds a lot more than he bargained for. He finds a woman who is still his wife and who is still everything that he had ever wanted. He finds reasons for her defection that are beyond his comprehension. And he finds a heart within him that is still susceptible to the woman he once loved and now to the God which she serves.

Eventually, Jake has a decision to make as to whether or not he still wants to be a part of her life or if even he is the man to do so. Not willing to drag her down into his ever downward spiraling existence, Jake leaves her.

Nevertheless, God has other plans for them. Through circumstances lovingly orchestrated by His hand, the Lord brings Jake and Rachel back together but not before they walk through the valley of the shadow of death. It is only then that they truly realize the full meaning of enduring love, unfailing faith, and selfless sacrifice.

About the Author

Over the course of many years I have accumulated associate degrees in Computer Information Systems and Nursing and a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. When that education was coupled with a life-long love of writing, the inevitable outcome was the emergence of this story. Seeing this work in print is the fulfillment of a dream and, I hope, the beginning of many works yet to come.
