About the Author

Anne Julia Carabis was born and raised in Lansingburgh, a small town about ten miles north of Albany, New York. Old Tom, the draft horse in this story, actually became a part of the Carabis household when Anne Julia was about eleven years old. Her father bought Tom because he was old and could no longer work pulling and hauling. Tom became a “riding horse” in his old age. After two or three years Tom was put out to pasture on a friend’s farm. The author worked in a medical laboratory for a number of years, and then taught remedial reading and math in the public schools. She and her family have always loved taking care of animals - dogs and horses especially.
