About the Book
Born in the last decade of the nineteenth century in rural Bladen County,
North Carolina, Georgia was the typical child whose two great loves
were being outdoors and spending time with her father. However, the
presentation of her story is unique in that the first part is autobiographical
in nature. She started writing what she called “a few things that happened
in my life” on January 1, 1952, when she was 57 years old. Her childhood
and early adulthood experiences reflect the customs of the times as she
describes how her family survived floods, fire, illness and extreme weather
conditions. On her first day of school, she really did walk two miles to the
one-room schoolhouse.
Since her father disapproved of her choice for a husband, at 17 she eloped
to marry Judd Ezzell. She and the groom drove away in a horse and
buggy to start a new life in neighboring Sampson County. Georgia always
maintained that Judd was the love of her life, and 10 children later, they
were still together..
The account of her later years is provided by four of her granddaughters. This
phase of her life begins during the Great Depression, when events occurred
that made recovery from the devastation of the depression very difficult.
Th e family’s responses to life’s challenges make an interesting narrative that
ranges from inspirational to religious to comical.
