About the Book
Follow the heart-breaking tale of a young midwife, Siuntla, hardly more than a child herself when she is Outcast by her own People on their planet of origin, Kiwa, for saving one of the infants in a twin birth which Village Elders are certain may bring the community bad luck. In the meantime, a million sets of foreign eyes set their sights on Siuntla’s village and take horrifying advantage of the People who dwell there: confident in who they are as denizens of Kiwa, and yet crushed by the supreme ignorance of the blood which actually flows in their veins. As Siuntla flees with her child and struggles to protect him from Elders who would steal him away, Siuntla faces romantic love, the sting of jealousy, the heart-break of betrayal, and concern for the children she is raising…all the while trying to discover who—or what—she really is.
