About the Book

Passionate Spinster: The Diary of Patty Rogers, 1785 is a startling glimpse into a year in the life of a real young woman who lived in a small New Hampshire town during the Revolution. Patty Rogers was tormented by her unrequited love for the first principal of the Phillips Exeter Academy. As an upper class woman, her daily life and romantic perspective reveal many more parallels with the life and tales of Jane Austen than with the life of her New England contemporary, midwife Martha Ballard of Maine. Dr. Easton has included a summary of Rogers family history drawn from the diary of father Daniel Rogers, a Harvard graduate turned notorious evangelist, and a summary of town history and spirit of the times. All references in the diary have been meticulously researched.
