About the Book

The history of the Westgarth Baseball Club is really a demographic review of the author, his church, and his association with the sport of baseball. The club has an interesting story when compared with the history of the Epiphany Parish over a very volatile period in our history. The Depression, World War 2, the post war recovery and the years there after with political, population and ethnic changes to our everyday way of life, seen through the eyes of an octogenarian who has lived through this historic period.

About the Author

Dick Legge was born in Northcote in 1928 and was a member of this Parish from the start. He attended Sunday school, Wales St State School and joined the boy scouts at 11 years old. He attended Preston Tech for 4 years. During the war years he was involved in ARP Warden and Messenger duties. He started working in 1944. 1948 he stared as a production planner at Ringrip. The same year he left the Rover crew and started playing cricket with St Aidans C.C. After 1 season he commenced playing with Epiphany Baseball Club, the mother church. A relative newcomer to both sports, he became quite a useful all rounder, and a steady batter and field at baseball. 1955 he became secretary of the WBC. A post he held for over 50 years. He also served on the Victorian Baseball Association, activities, pennant, umpires selection and tribunal committees. He played over 500 senior games, then captained 2s and 3s nine for 10 years, 10 years as base coach, and since then scored for the 2s nine. He has had numerous visits to Major League Baseball in US, and is a very keen student of the game. Dick Legge was awarded the Australian sports medal for his services to baseball. Therefore he has been alive for the entire life of the baseball club. His 3 brother, Geoff, John and Robert all played many games with the club. As the Historian of the club he has all the experience to write the club history.
