Prologue
The room was a bright red-orange color, alive with movement. As she looked closer at the walls around her, she saw the flames crawling up the walls. It has gone too far, it had to be stopped right now. She heard screams and other voices up ahead in the flames.
Jake yelled for her and tried to tell her to run away. He then yelled out in pain from being hit by the creature. She walked into the room and everyone went quiet, some in fear and others in anticipation. She looked around the smoke filled room until she found it. She made eye contact with the terrible creature that has been haunting her.
“It's time to end this now!” She yelled as she ran straight toward the beast.
Chapter 1
The rain dripped down the window as the gray sky brought lightening and thunder. The sky seemed to be fighting itself as lightening as thrown down at the earth below. The sounds of battle cries were drowned out by the thunder. Black clouds came rolling in as the battle continued up in the heavens.
“Hello! Hey! Snap out of it.” Maddie King said as she waved her hand in front of Laura Adams' face.
“What?” Laura said as she felt herself come back to reality. She had been wrapped up in her daydream about a battle happening within the clouds. Scenes of a man with bright golden hair had been shooting arrow after arrow into the shadows and a woman with brown hair in an outfit of pure white was freezing everything in her path.
“I wanted to know what you were drawing?” She pointed down at the notebook in her hands. There was a drawing of a flaming arrow and an arrow of ice that crossed each other and formed an X. Above the center was a crescent moon and at the bottom was a shining sun. On each side of it was the letter A.
“I don't know. I don't even remember drawing it.” She ripped the piece of paper out of her notebook and threw it on the bed. “I had the same daydream as yesterday. It was the same man and woman and they were fighting against something.”
“Maybe its your real parents trying to talk to you.” She ducked as the crumpled piece of paper came flying at her face. She stuck her tongue out as the paper fell to the ground.
“Very funny.” Laura took a pillow from her bed and threw it at Maddie's head. She picked up the pillow and was about to throw it back when someone knocked on the bedroom door. Laura rolled off her bed and walked over to the door to open it. On the other side of the door stood Laura's older twin brother, Jake Adams. When she opened the door, Jake strolled into the room as if he owned the place.
Everybody seemed to simply love Jake. He is the poster boy of good looks. He has reddish chestnut brown hair and gray eyes just like their mother. He has a rounded face, long eyelashes and full lips. He has a muscular built courtesy of all his sports and stands six feet tall. He also has their mother's grace that Laura cannot achieve, no matter how hard she tried.
Meanwhile, Laura's appearance is curly chestnut brown hair, oval shaped face, long eyelashes, and lips that are fuller on the bottom than on top. She is slim and slender like her mother and has a creamy skin-tone complexion compared to her brother's sun tanned skin. She is the clumsy child of the family and always seems to hurt herself. She is five foot eleven and the only interesting part about herself are her eyes which were green, gold, and brown, resembling a blooming flower.
She walked over to Jake, who stood in front of her desk. She knew that he was in her room for two reasons only. He either wanted to bother her or to flirt with Maddie which also bothered her. So really, he was only in her room to bother her and waste time. By the look on Jake's face, he knew what she was thinking. He always loved to flirt with Maddie since he had a small crush on her.
Maddie King had long wine red hair and a heart shaped face with bright sea-green eyes. She was Laura's best friend since they were on the same team in the History Bowl three years ago. When Jake went over to Maddie, she shook her head at him and turned to Laura.
“Laura, will you please control your brother.” She turned toward Jake and pointed her finger at him and then the door.
“Jake, I'm not in the mood for games, so leave.” She walked over to the door, opened it, and stood waiting for him. He shook his head in amusement at her as he walked toward the door.
“I just came in here to deliver a message. Mom called to say that her and dad were going to be home late. She ordered a pizza for all of us. She also said that we're having a family meeting when they get home.”
“What'd you do now?” Jake was always in trouble which had caused the family meeting idea in the first place. Laura always hated the family meetings because they never involved her directly. It was either for Jake's behavior or for bouncing movie ideas off each other. They had these meetings every week, for the past three years, since they had moved to Washington. When your parents are in the movie business, you are used to it.
“I didn't do anything this time Laura, I swear. Also, they can't want to do a discussion meeting, since they're almost done with the movie.” Jake looked at her with worry. He did not like not knowing the meaning behind the meeting. She felt the same way about it. Usually when they do not know about one, it almost always ended up with bad news. They heard a knock coming from the front door and Maddie started to make her way downstairs.
“I don't know about you two, but I'm starving!” Laura and Jake looked at Maddie and started laughing. They made their way downstairs splitting up in the living room. Jake went to answer the door for the pizza, while Laura and Maddie set the table and went to find some drinks. When Jake came back with the pizza, they sat down and ate in silence. Jake was busy wondering about the family meeting that he refused to start a conversation with the girls. Laura was worried about the meeting like Jake, but didn't want Maddie to be uncomfortable.
“Anything interesting happening this weekend?” She asked Maddie as they ate.
“Yeah,” she said with a mischievous smile, “I'm going on a date with Jake.” The sound of Laura and Jake choking on their pizza filled the room along with Maddie's laughter. Laura gulped down her water before turning toward her.
“Just kidding. Your silence was killing me.”
“Well, your joke almost killed me!” Laura shook her head at their laughter before finally joining in.
“Way to keep it interesting, Mads.” Jake said as he threw away his plate and walked into the living room.
After they finished the pizza, the girls went back upstairs. Around seven o'clock, Maddie received a text message from her mother telling her to come home. Since her parents weren't home yet, Laura decided to walk Maddie to her house. Jake tagged along so Laura didn't have to walk back in the dark by herself.
“See ya later, Mad.” Laura said when they reached her house.
“See you Saturday night, Maddie.” Jake said with a smile. Both girls punched his arm before Maddie walked up her driveway.
“Later. Don't get grounded beforehand.” She looked at Jake as she said it before walking inside.
On the walk home from Maddie's house, Jake and Laura argued back and forth about the family meeting. They started to blame each other for the meeting and worried about what was going to happen. As they walked up the street, they saw their parents pull into the driveway. When they made it to the front door, their parents were already walking into the house and headed straight for the kitchen. The twins looked at each other in concern and walked inside. Mrs. Adams stood by the kitchen table and read over Mr. Adams' shoulder.
