“A Century of GHS Athletics” is an effort to put as many individual and team achievements as possible in one place.

About the Author

I grew up in Grinnell and graduated from GHS in 1957. Played on two good basketball teams but lost both years in district tournament to eventual state champs—Marshalltown (30-0) by nine in ’56 and Dowling in ’57 by four points. I am amazed and pleased at great success of recent GHS teams—boys and girls—in all sports, but for old timers, the achievements of the Kriegel and Dunne football teams are probably most astounding, as our football teams before 1975 were very up and down, nothing like the high-level consistency of the later teams.
