About the Author

Miriam Madison and I have been friends for almost 30 years. In 1989 at a church gathering, she hands me a copy of her newly published “Secret Passages of the Heart” poetry book. Her poetry reflected a very humble and deeply spiritual person that I wanted to get to know better. Through the years, she and I have traveled Georgia’s highways and back roads to attend gatherings of Flint River Presbyterian Women. She served a term of the Flint River Presbyterian Women’s Board as President. We always had laughter, shared our treasured stories and found adventure along the way. Miriam looked for the needs to be met in the educational vocation. In the early 1990’s she was Principal of Pearl Stephens Elementary School. She saw the need for a playground for her physically handicapped students and sought the help of the community leaders, local officials and school parents. In 1993 “Pearl’s Playground’ was opened. It was the first in the state of Georgia of handicapped playgrounds in Public Schools. As a lay Pastor in the Presbyterian Church, she serves in many capacities, especially taking an active interest in young people and helping them with achieving goals and positive outlooks. Working in her garden, digging in the good earth, is when she is happiest. She shares the garden’s bounty with her neighbors and her church family. Someone wrote that if you want to find God, look to nature. It is a lesson we all should live by. Miriam’s friend, Jane D. Gramley
