About the Book

This book is probably not one that will be appreciated by people who constantly criticize America and do not appreciate the Country. The exception would be persons who fit the description in that first sentence, but are able to calmly and thoughtfully consider fact-based examination of weighty, even controversial, issues. For those who love America, hopefully this book will be informative, thought-provoking, and a call to action. All of the articles presented here were written by Karl Merritt. The vast majority of them appeared in Up and Coming weekly, a newspaper in Fayetteville, North Carolina. These commentaries speak forthrightly to many of the challenging issues and conditions facing America and/or the world. Karl is a black man who was born in and has lived in Americal all of his life. Even though he recognizes that there is racism in the country that he loves, he does not accept that America is a racist country. Currently, black Americans are expected, seemingly required, by the black community to see racism in every happening that adversely affects the community or a member of it. Any black person who openly rejects and disobeys this rule of blackness is socially and politically persecuted by the black community. Karl Merritt refused, and continues refusing to bow at the altar of “America is a racist country.” Merritt also takes unpopular stands regarding other issues that clearly have nothing to do with race. Refusal to have his thinking controlled by anybody or anything is the reason that this book is titled: “Unbridled Commentary.”
