About the Author

In 1967, James R. Flynn was appointed Foundation Professor of Political Studies at the University of Otago in New Zealand. In 2001, he received the Gold medal for Distinguished Career Research and in 2010, was made Honorary Doctor of Science. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He was profiled in Scientific American (the Flynn Effect) because of his research on human intelligence. His recent book, What is intelligence? (2007), has been well received and in 2007, the International Society for Intelligence Research named him Distinguished Contributor. His most important books in ethics and political thought are How to defend humane ideals (2000) and Where have all the liberals gone? (2008). He lives in Dunedin and competes in veteran’s athletics. At present, he holds five provincial records for men aged 75 and over at distances ranging from 800 to 10,000 meters.
