About the Author

Karl Drew Harzell, the son and grandson of Methodist ministers, graduated from Wesleyan University, and holds a Ph.D. in History from Harvard. A College professor and university dean, he has retired from the administration at SUNY Stony Brook. Just at the end of World War II, he was appointed Archivist and Historian of the New York State War Council, and later served as Administrative Officer in the Director’s Office in the early days of the Brookhaven National Laboratory. He has three sons by his first wife, later after her death, he married the poet Elizabeth F. Hartzell. His vitae are in Who’s Who in America.
