About the Book
This book is the story of the diversified life of Emerson Charles Britton. It was at the age of 89 that he decided to listen to his family and friends and pen the book. It is filled with reflections of his life and his experiences.
The book begins with his life as a child. He was raised in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania by a father who was born in Kansas and a mother from Germany. His parents were strict and expected their children to be seen and not heard. This may have helped Emerson to observe the many facets of life and may have contributed to his diversity.
Life in small town USA is shared with the reader in Emerson’s own style. He describes the area and its’ surroundings as he recalls them. He writes small anecdotes about working with his father in the family grocery store. He was expected to fill in wherever his father needed him, which he did. That only added to his experiences. He describes his life as a private pilot, an insurance agent, an enlisted Navy man, a carpenter, a milkman and a husband and father.
He tells of his neighborhood, the people of the town and surrounding area in such a way that one can relate to his vignettes. Furthermore, he shares stories which include his hobbies of flying, carpentry, and photography.
Emerson includes highlights from his travels. His children moved to various places in the United States and Europe where he visited. He describes trips to Holland, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Panama, Hawaii, Mexico and domestic trips. While there, he loved photographing and later painting scenes from those travels. When he returned home he would tell all his family and friends about his adventures and included many of those in the book.
He describes his later years and includes stories about his long first marriage and his short second marriage. All of which are told in an understandable format and with something of interest to all.
Included in the book are examples of his painting. These paintings were exhibited at a celebration party commemorating his 90th birthday.
