About the Book

The slippery road One of the main heroes of the movie is Albert, a Russian painter who leads his life unsuccessfully, earning pennies and living poorly. He loves his wife Olga dearly, but she grows tired of an empty life and leaves him for a man who promises her a rich life in New York. Albert is determined to find his wife. He falls in trust of two women, whom he lives with. He sells their apartments and other valuable things and with stolen money moves to live in New York. There he paints and sells some of his pictures. At last he finds Olga who instead of leading a happy life is washing dishes in the restaurant. She falls in the Albert’s hands asking him for forgiveness. Albert’s friend helped him to get a contract in France and he and Olga move to Paris. In Paris Albert became successful. Feeling the weight of his sins press down upon him, he vows to return all the money that he stole from the women in Russia. His feeling of guilt however came late since he is already a subject of a search. Max, a businessman from St. Petersburg became involved in his search. He saved the life of a young woman who was a victim of Albert’s fraud. Victoria is reluctant to let Max get involved in her problems but young couple falls in love with each other and she tells him her story and asks him to seek the creator of her problems. He promised to help the victims of Albert’s crime. He is determined to break away Albert’s life, to take his money and to kill Albert. Max’s plan involves the help of the former jail mate Vasilie whom he convinced to take a job for a hefty sum of money. Vasilie arrives in New York where he experienced a lot of difficulties without English language and without a job. There found out that he lost the track of Albert who moved to Paris. Max helps him to go to Paris. In Paris Vasilie is doing quite good using his talent like a singer in one of the restaurants. But Max reminds him of his criminal past and forced him to fulfil the original plan to kill Albert and get money from him. Finally Vasilie finds Albert and starts to harass him over the phone. Scared for his life Albert and Olga ran away to a small town on the sea, hoping that no one will find them there. All of a sudden a wealthy television owner, Rene, enters the picture. His story includes a Russian girl, with who he fell in love while visiting Moscow. They had a prolonged love affair. One day Dasha, his Russian lover was found dead in his beach house. At first the police suspected him of killing Dasha but the case was dropped against Rene. Her former boyfriend killed Dasha. Rene’s story takes a really twisted turn when he bumps into Olga at the beach. The resemblance of Olga and Dasha is great. And Rene sees in her the same person. Once again Olga begins an affair with another man, breaking her husbands heart. During all this drama, Vasilie finds Albert and carefully spies on all three characters. As soon as he gets a signal from Max he begins his plan. He sneaks into Rene’s house and puts on Rene’s clothes and takes his gun, while Rene and Olga are having sex in the hotel in the mountains. Vasilie proceeds to Albert’s house where he kills the painter. The police detective this time is sure that Rene and Olga are both guilty of this murder and they are arrested and tried and jailed. Vasilie finds four hundred thousand dollars hidden in the mountain by Albert. Max and Vasilie are successful in their plan.
