About the Book

About the Author

James Joseph Doyle was born in Philadelphia on February 17, 1902; one of the 21 children of Laurence Doyle and Margaret Hickey Doyle, immigrants from County Wicklow, Ireland. Laurence was from Hollywood and Margaret was from Rathdangan. They instilled in their children a deep faith and a love of literature gleaned from the Land of Saints and Scholars. When James was four years old he was stricken with Polio. His early years were spent between the wonderful care he received at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the loving care of his Mother when he was well enough to be at home. In 1929 James realized his dream of living in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, when he moved to Hilltown. It was there he met his beloved Betty (Elizabeth Anna) who had a life-long love of poetry, and who inspired so many of his poems. They married in 1937, and their Daughter, Betsy (Elizabeth Mary), was born on her Father’s birthday in 1942. Jim’s poems are graced with faith and philosophy and his great Irish wit.
